Somewhere in Blackpool

"So.. Did you know you can't live without your liver?" Serenity said, drinking her water quietly.

"Really?" Elroy was stirring the ice in his glass around with the straw.

"Mmm-hmm. You'd be poisoned." Serenity wanted to just smack herself, but she smiled and continued on. "Nice weather, huh?"

It was drizzling rain outside; everything was bathed in a misty gray. "Yeah."

"I was serious. I like rain.." Serenity said, looking out the window glumly. "What have you been up to after you graduated?"

"Working, mostly... Oh, I'm--" Elroy cut himself off. As if he'd tell her about Irene. As a matter of fact, he'd rather not remember that himself. "I'm involved at a church... around here. Well, not really involved, but I volunteer sometimes... build up some good karma, you know?"

"That's so nice. Back in school, you seemed like the twin who was more likely to go to jail. For prostitution." Serenity laughed, but it wasn't one of those bitter laughs, she was actually making a joke. "Anyways, it's legal there. But, what else do you do? You have a job? Um, a kid? That's what your letter said."

"What?" Elroy looked up from the swirling ice cubes. Did he actually write that? Shit!

"What do you mean, what? You were the one who wrote it.." Serenity grumbled.

He stared at Serenity for a moment, wide eyed. Then, he decided to laugh it off. "Ha, ha... I did, didn't I?"

"Are you drinking shots over there? Whatever. So.. What else is new?"

"That's about it." He went back to stirring the ice in his glass. They made that delightful little clinking whenever one hit the sides.

Serenity stared at his water glass. It just kept swirling around. "Would they hurry up already?"

About 15 more minutes passed. The waiter returned with Serenity's meal.

Serenity finished it off. The poor piece of the cow was gone before it could ever know where it was. Well, it was dead, so it wouldn't, but.. She ate it fast. There, point across. "Thanks for dinner," She said, smiling and drinking another glass of water.

After witnessing how fast Serenity polished off that steak, Elroy repeated, "Lard."

"I am not a lard!" Serenity said. "You're just.. you're a butthead."

Elroy smiled, chugged the rest of the water, and slammed a sickle on the table. "Not like he'll know what it is, a-ha..."

"Whatever." Serenity picked up her purse, which contained absolutely nothing, and got up. "So, where to?"

"I figured I'd just head... err, home."

"Oh, I wanna see it! I bet you have a really big house."

"I live in the shelter, dumbass."

"Oh... Right. Well that's no fun." Serenity mumbled.

"I get by."

"Okay, answer this. How the hell did you get laid and have a kid when you live in a homeless shelter?"
